Apply now to join GLSEN Central New Jersey's 2015-2016 Student Leadership Team!
Learn. Lead. Inspire. Thank you for your inquiry in the GLSEN Central NJ Student Leadership Team (SLT). Our program is a very unique opportunity that transforms students into empowered leaders. Every year we kick start our program with an informative, reflective, and inspirational training retreat. The training is designed to give members the tools and the confidence required to speak out and take action. This year our training will be held on October 16 through 18. The location is to be determined. The SLT training is a one of a kind experience that leaves students feeling enlightened and empowered.
The Student Leadership Team is the perfect avenue to channel students’ leadership skills into making a difference. Throughout the year, our members will collectively work together towards the goal of creating a safe and affirming learning environment for schools across the state of New Jersey. As a part of our initiatives, we will produce materials and resources to help mobilize other high school students in Gay Straight Alliances to participate in GLSEN’s national Days of Action, such as the Day of Silence, Ally Week, and No Name Calling Week. Furthermore, students will have first-hand experience in creating a platform for students all over the state to lobby their local congress-person and state senators/assemblypeople in support of the Student Non-Discrimination Act (SNDA), the Safe Schools Improvement Act (SSIA), and the New Jersey bill A3380 advocating LGBTQ inclusive curriculum. Pretty cool, right?
The Student Leadership Team is a truly powerful program that inspires change. Every year, the team consists of some of the most passionate advocates in the state. Team members never cease to inspire each other and learn from one another. There is no other program in the state like this. By the end of the school year, our students will be transformed into agents of change who, by that time, will have left a long lasting positive legacy in their school, community, and state. As Margaret Mead once said, "Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.”
Student Leadership Team members must be:
- Dedicated to ensuring safety in schools
- Devoted to GLSEN's inclusive community
- Committed to following-through on all tasks
- Interested in facilitating the activities of the organization, strengthening leadership skills, and working with others.
Team membership applications are due on: Sunday September 20th 2015 by Midnight.
